This photo is an excellent symbol representing the people of the Bahamas, and their tenacity in trying to establish a foothold on these rocky, inhospitable shores. The five-fingered claw mark of the shadows is very indicative of what these folks have to deal with on a daily basis in order to survive here even today. They have to fight just to barely hang on. They occasionally make a step forward only to have Mother Nature slap them back two steps almost every hurricane season. The Lucayans who lived here before Columbus arrived in 1492 must have been an amazingly adaptive culture. Everything is a contradiction here. The sharp iron rock shores are punctuated by soft little sand beaches in the coves. It’s unbelievably beautiful here at best, while at the same time, relentlessly cruel at worst. The Bahamian people have adapted just like this tiny plant in solid rock.
