There are six little Panama Canal-like locks along the Okeechobee Waterway from coast to coast via Lake Okeechobee. They're fun to transit, but sometimes a little intimidating, depending on how far you're being lifted or being dropped. On this trip, our largest rise was 8 feet at the Ortona Lock. That definitely generates a little turbulence in a lock that's 30 feet wide by 100 feet long. The lockmaster opens the lock on request; each boater must handle his own lines.
