OKEECHOBEE WATERWAY
The final five days of our Winter 09/10 cruising will be spent crossing right through the middle of the State of Florida from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic Coast. We’ll begin at Ft Myers Beach at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River on the Gulf Coast and head eastward, upstream. We will be negotiating four, maybe five, locks along the 150 mile route, dozens of fixed and bascule bridges, and finishing with a real treat the final day as we hire “Billy, the Boat Tipper” to tip us so we can just squeek underneath the Mayaca Railroad Vertical Bridge on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. Yep, we’re a hair too tall. Our destination at Indiantown Marina, Summer Breeze’s summer home, is on the St Lucie River leg heading downhill for the Atlantic.
We’ve shanghaied Charlie for the first couple of days of the trip.
