BOATS ABLAZE IN THE GROVE

On a beautiful Saturday morning, December 17, 2011, we awoke on Summer Breeze to the acrid smell of burning fiberglass and the sounds of what we realized later were propane & fuel tanks exploding. Just a couple of days ago we decided to move into the Dinner Key Mooring Field which is operated by the City of Miami in downtown Coconut Grove on the western edge of Biscayne Bay to do some grocery restocking and take a much needed shower. It was proving to be a nice civilized break from living on the anchor for the past week. Since our mooring ball was only a hundred yards from the actual Coconut Grove Marina and all of its gorgeous motor yachts & sailboats in their slips, we were feeling pretty safe and secure. The first half of these photos were taken right as the sun was starting to come up, but way before the sounds of firetrucks & helicopters filled our little safe haven. Fortunately for us we were a good 300 yards from the inferno, but it was still impressive. The pics are taken standing on the bow of Summer Breeze.

When the smoke cleared, we dinked over for a closer look in the afternoon. Four multi-million dollar motor yachts had been reduced to melted fiberglass just barely sticking up above the waterline. Up above them (to the left) were 5 stories of stacked boats that had to have been toasted like marshmallows in their cradles from the heat alone. Scarey sight.
We'll be hanging around Dinner Key and the Grove for the next few weeks through the holidays until we get a weather window to cross the Gulf Stream to Bimini in the Bahamas. There's got to be one, sooner or later, right? Stay tuned.
